Cingular Data - Smartphone vs. Pocket PC

I was once a authorized distributor for Cingular/At&t, Verizon, Sprint, Nextel, T-Mobile, and all prepaid carriers. After talking to some of my old colleagues, I've realized that you can use Cingular Smartphone data ($19.99 and includes 200 text messages) with your Cingular 8125 instead of using the Cingular Pocket PC data ($39.99). Many of my old colleagues have activated Wizards, since March, with the Smartphone data and without any issues. Both the Cingular 2125 Smartphone and the Cingular 8125 Pocket PC connect to MediaNet using the same methods. Not sure if you can downgrade data plans because they may recognize what you're trying to do, but I'm sure some saavy talkers can work something out in their favor with the customer service rep.

Yeah, I did that last year with my HTC Blueangel PPC Phone (Cingular SX66). I even had the CSA add it to my plan over the phone.... If you get one that won't, just go to a local store and say you want to add the $19.99 Medianet package to your line.... The big difference is medianet uses wap.cingular and PDA plan uses isp.cingular, which theoretically is faster, but many have seen no difference.

People tend to tiffany jewelry be assertive in two different ways. They may be “ask-assertive” or “tell-assertive.” The ask-assertive discount Tiffany sliver Bracelets person uses a questioning approach to indicate intention. When it tiffany accessories comes to choosing a lunch spot, an ask-assertive person like me might say, “Would you like to go to Carl’s Jr.?” discount Tiffany Earrings (my favourite burger joint) tiffany co jewelry and not the more discount tiffany rings direct “Let’s go to Carl’s Jr.!” The intent is clear, but the approach is understated. By starting the conversation that way, I open the door for future discussion while at the same time letting you know discount return to tiffany what I think. I've got the same setup on my 8125. It's essentally 1/2 price data and 200 free messages per month. Went in with my SIM in my RAZR and said that I wanted to switch to the new unlimited data/200 message package. They never even asked about my 8125. Just make sure that the CSR does not leave a kb/pay-per-use feature on your account. You should be able to check that on cingular.com after the change has been made.

I'm using the old Media Works bundle. For $20 a month I have Unlimited data, 1500 texts, and 200 MMS. I've been using it for a few months on my 8125 and it works great :)

I had the $20 unlimited data plan for about 3 months and it worked perfect with my 8125. There was no need to pay the other $20.

However, I just switched to T-mobile because I got a better deal on minutes. T-mobile only has 1 data plan, and it's $29.99...

Here's the kicker. Cingular has 3 data plans.

Smartphone: $20 - No streaming video or audio, no tethering - by contract.
Pocket PC: $40 - No streaming video or audio, no tethering - by contract
Laptop Card: $80 - Streaming video and audio allowed, tethering moot.

T-Mobile has 1 data plan

Data: $30 for all phones, unlimited, allows streaming, allows tethering, and allows you to take your sim card out of your phone and put it into a laptop card and use it for GPRS/EDGE for your laptop, no additional charge.

The T-Mobile Total Internet package you speak of also gives you unlimited access to T-Mobile Hotspots, don't you forget :D

As well, the Cingular data plan for $19.99 (unlimited data, 200 sms/mms) also has a $29.99 version that gives you 1000 sms/mms.

Well it's good to know that if Cingular ever torques me off that there is an alternative. And knowing Cingular... it'll happen.

Thanks to everyone for this great site.

I've just hung up with Cingular and they only offered me a $30 and $40 plan. I'm already on the $40 (PDAConnect, unlimited data) plan. They mentioned the $30 but said it would only allow access to the Cingular intra-web (no real internet browsing). Does anyone know if that is in fact true? Also, is the $20 plan still available? Does it allow full browsing? I can live without the internet (barely) but I need my POP3 connection.

I had cingular's lowest data plan. With the lowest data plan and my wizard, I was able to:

1) Surf the whole web
2) Pop email

They told me that I would only be able to reach cingular's intra-web, but it wasn't true. I knew it wasn't true when they said this:

"You can only use cingular's intra-web, including msn, google, and some other sites."

Light-bulb above head! "Wait, I can access google?" They said: "Yes. You can surf to any site you can get to from google."

Obviously not a computer user, huh!?

HTC Hermes - Cingular 8525

So as i have been debating purchasing the 8125 for the past month and have heard many mixed pieces of information about which package i must have I am wondering what the final verdict is. I would much rather go with the MediaMax Bundle (1000 txt, Unlim MMtexts, and Unlim Internet) for $30 rather then the one Cingular is pushing me to get at $40 then have to add txts. So it seems that it is true (like surprisingly one independent vendor told me) that I can just have the Mediabundle to browse all internet. I can do so with my MPX 220 so figured this has to be true with the 8125. Can i get a final OK as a fact that the bill hasnt been afected so that i dont sign up just for the rebate and spend more money on it then the rebate is worth. Thanks.

I promise, Cingular's data plans all allow you to access the real internet. There is no difference in speed. And when I had Cingular's $20 a month "MediaNet" I could even surf WAP pages (If that means pages like www.google.com/pda)

There are TONS of articles on how this works at HowardForums.com.

Ok, so I just bought this device, without any data plans. I plan on getting the $20 SmartPhone Connect Unlimited w/Xpress Mail, will that work with the HTC Wizard (8125)? How would one go about doing that? Can someone please post a step-by-step howto? Thank you!

If you have a Cingular 8125 that you just bought from them, and you purchased the data plan (even for smartphones) you should just be able to put your sim card in the 8125, click on start, click on internet explorer, and a little window should pop up at the top that says connecting to Cingular GPRS. Wait about 10 - 20 seconds and you should be connected.

Surf Away!!

As long as you are running a Cingular phone on a cingular plan in cingular's service area, the settings should be automatic, making it far easier to hook up to GPRS than it is to WiFi.

Looking to buy the HTC TYTN not from Cingular but online now that it is available. Once I have the phone how do I get it connected to Cingular? Do I just call or do I need to take it to a store so they can program the SIM? Will they force me on a 2 year contract or can I just go on 1 year and I learned quite a bit about data plans here. Thanks for the input.

Most likely, the goons at the store won't be able to help you. You should be able to get help from Cingular's tech support though. They will walk you through the connections manager to set up a new connection.

There should also be some places on the internet with all of the settings, including Cingular's website or forums and Howardforums.com

Good Luck!

you don't even need to use xpress mail on cingular, because if you turn off connect to proxy for your medianet connection, you will be free to connect to pop3 mail servers and so fourth. 8125 comes preconfigured to work with medianet, so the reps trying to say that you have to get the dataplan are just clueless.

OK so I just wanted to add my experience, as even after reading all these posts I was still a little weary of trying this.

I had the $40 Data Connect Unlimited plan and an add-on 200 Text Messages for $4.99. ~$45/month on top of voice and I still had $15 in overages on txt messages last month. ~$70.

From reviewing the website I saw three possible plans to switch to:

SmartPhone Connect Unlimited w/Xpress Mail ($19.99)

Media Max 200 ($19.99)

Media Max 1000 ($29.99)

I don't really understand why they have the Smartphone plans and the Media Max plans. They all offer unlimited data, but the Media Max plans offer 200 or 1000 txt messages as well. Doesn't seem like much of a benefit to get the Smartphone plan.

I switched to Media Max 1000 and changed my settings over to wap.cingular and all that, enabled AlwaysOn in the registry and voila. It works fine. Brought down my bill at least $15/month (and much more with the sms overage charges). No noticeable change in speed. Agile Messenger works fine. Resco Radio didnt work at first, kept getting server refused connect errors, but it just started working now. I dunno, maybe it wasn't a problem on my end. Anyone know whether tethering to my laptop will still work. Anyone tried this?

Having made the switch, I am online right now on my laptop using my 8125 as a modem over bluetooth. I clocked 17 KB/s downloading from an Intel FTP server. Which translates to ~130 kb/s.

Seems slow on the web but I'm not sure if it's slower than before I switched, as I rarely use the phone as a modem.

Be careful. Last I read a cingular data contract, tethering and streaming audio/video were not allowed and they could cancel you for it... The $80/mo data plan @ cingular allows tethering & streaming.

All t-mob data plans allow streaming and tethering.
