Setup your Cingular 8125 as a Modem

Hello,

I'm an avid CarPC enthusiast and 8125 owner. I've wanted a way to connect to the internet in my car for a while (don't ask why.) I just got a Cingular 8125 and thought it'd be a good time to try it out. Well, it works. Albeit VERY slowly. It feels like a 14.4kbps modem. I believe my exact download speed was 77kbps and 7kbps up. Those numbers don't reflect the mind numbing slowness of the device. So the real purpose. Here's the info. Sorry if this is a repost of info. I couldnt' find this anywhere on the site. I found all this on Cingulars site with some digging.

This was all done on XP SP2. Targus Bluetooth Dongle or straight USB cable.

Setup your phone to connect to your computer. Bluetooth or USB.
THere is a Program called MODEM-link under programs on your handheld. If you go into this there are a couple of settings. Just go with the default. Then in the bottom left there is an ACTIVATE button. Hit it. This will usually disable your activesync as I believe it uses the same COM port.
If you are connected properly and have sound working you will hear a happy little USB connect sound. You may need the drivers off your cingular CD. Other wise it will take you through the typical install process. Then you SHOULD have a connection in your NETWORK CONNECTIONS control panel. If not you can try going through and making a connection manually. I believe my device registered as HTC USB MODEM or for bluetooth BLUETOOTH MODEM. Your results and COM ports may vary.

Here's the info for the Dial Up connection.

Telephone #: *99#

Username: ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (ALL CAPS)
Password: CINGULAR1 (ALL CAPS)

Then try it out. If you want to know you're using it for sure (the speed will give it away, be PATIENT !!) try disabling your internet connection (i.e. Local Area Connection) on your NETWORK CONNECTIONS control panel, the same place you dialed you phone modem from.

DONT FORGET TO DISABLE MODEM LINK WHEN YOU'RE DONE. Otherwise your activesync may not work.

This really wasn't hard to find on cingulars site but I thought it should be here. There is also a little better walkthrough if you didn't follow this too well.

Again, it was very slow for me! A good idea might be to keep using skweezer.net. I find it makes a big difference. Don't expect to do anything even moderate bandwidth unless your life depends on it and you've got LOTS of time. Unfortunately I don't think you could even do a basic music stream. Hopefully cingular will upgrade to higher speeds soon. or maybe not.

Mike

This is the closest I can get to the page. It's for the RAZR but worked fine on my phone.

PS Props to they guys who found the new ROMS.

Thanks for your contribution!

I changed the plain text URL into a link, the long URL messed up the lay-out. It does not seem to work though. It looks like it includes a session ID which has expired. You may want to have a look at that.

Just a word of warning... with the Username the OP posted, you are going to connect through their data connect network, and be charged accordingly.
If you have MEdia Net, you can connect through that rate plan by using the Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
This Username will use your data from your MEdia Net package instead of having to set up a seperate pricey data connect plan.
This is also especially nice for people such as my self who are on the old MEdia Works package with unlimited data :)
Either way though, it'll work. Using the 8125 as a modem was one of the first things I tried when I got it. It is slow, but it'll work.
Good luck guys!

I have tried both the WAP@... and the ISP@... methods and everything seems to work beautifully. However when I try to access a website (or ping it for that matter) from either my desktop or laptop it doesn't work. The connection status icon in the taskbar says 701 bytes received but never receives any more. I assume the authentication process involved that many bytes.

Reading the posts about using the 8125 as a modem and I saw that the MEdia connect plan used wap@cingulargprs.com as the login name. I have this plan and was wondering if there was a password associated with it.

I set up the bluetooth partnership between my laptop and my 8125, and told the laptop to use the 8125's dial up networking via com4. Then I was able to make a new dial up connection, told it to use com4 and to dial the numbers you listed, and it worked just fine. I was even able to sync with Activesync while using it as a modem.

640-721 It's a classic. 640-822 I don't know where I've seen him before. 640-721 What are you gonna do! 70-642 You and your big mouth. Fuck you! What a shame (pity). Ignorance is bliss. 640-802 Whatever's convenient for you. You really did it this time! 646-363 So that's how it is. What does he have that I don't!
