Change the location for ringtones

Stanley's picture

Depending on your device's manufacterer, the default location to store ringtones is either \Windows or \Windows\Rings\. You can change that location by edting the register.

  • Use Total Commander to navigate to HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring\
  • Open Directory, a new window should pop up now, containing the current location for ringtones
  • Change the value to wherever you want to store your ringtones, for example \Storage Card\
  • Soft reset your device by holding the Power button for 5 seconds.

Please note that using your Storage Card to store your ringtones may sound nice because it saves space in Main Memory, but there is a downside. When your device comes out of standby, it can not immediately access the Storage Card. This could lead to a situation where you receive a call while you HTC Wizard cannot find it's directory for ringtones.

I am not shure as to what sort of behaviour that would lead. If anyone knows what will happen, please let us know in the comments.

Slightly off topic...I'd like to add a new sound to the list of 'notification' sounds I can choose from for things like receiving an SMS. Any idea where those might be stored?

The notifications are .wav files and unfortunately you can't add more you have to overwrite the existing ones.

i've added approx 10 files to my mini s stored in /windows without overwriting existing files & can use them for notifications , alarms etc. the one file i use for main ringtone is copied to 'rings' folder & everything seems ok at mo.

That's interesting, what filetype are they? I've tried .mid's, .mp3's, .mp4's, and .wav's and I can't get any to work reguardless of where I put them. I'll need to find out if this is a Cingular 8125 specific problem, an AKU2 specific problem, or quite possibly a 'me' specific problem ^_^

No luck with that method.

Motifications do have to be .wav files, however you can add as many as you like, just save them directly to the windows folder then you can add as many wav choices as you would like and they will show up in the list when you goto "sounds and notifications". I used this method to record my kids and than used them as a noticiation for text messages.

If WM5 cannot find or access a certain ringtone it will attempt to use the default ringtone, failing that it will use the 'Windows Default' sound and since that is a protected file it should always be available in the \Windows folder. I learned this doing experiments after I recieved a phone call while copying some edited tones from my computer to my phone.

I am using the trial version of Phone Alarm. Lets me use any music file as an alarm tone or phone ringing tone, pretty cool. Wonder why WM 5 doesn't let me do it. Its kind of basic I thought.

***AUTHOR'S NOTE:FIXED THE ISSUE: Changed the InitVol which was at 0 for some reason. Changed it to 2***

---------------------------------------------------------------------
I followed the registry tweak on my cingular 8125 and the ring tones appeared to be there but when i did a test call, no sounds at all play. I get my text messages and all other notification tones yet no RINGtone - I cna get it to vibrate as well. So i set back my default directory to /windows/ and still, no sound on a phone call - has this happened to anyone else yet? Thanks.

I'm having the issue you are speaking of with Bullguard Antivirus. I install all of my new programs on my storage card which was not a good way to install bullguard so I removed it and reinstalled it onto the device. The problem is that now that it is back on the device the status monitor is still looking for an executable in the storage card directory and I get this popup every 5 minutes. I'm not sure how to fix this problem if anyone has a clue please respond.

Your problem is probably in the '\Windows\StartUp\' folder remove the shortcut to the StorageCard version of the .exe file and that little popup should stop annoying you ^_^

Ive done the registry tweak and changed it from \Windows\ to \My Documents\My Music\ and its not working for some reason. By the way i have a T-Mobile MDA Vario if that matters.

Also does any one know how to include the repeat option when changing the options for the "Missed Calls" notification sounds??? Because as of right now, its unselectable but i can see the option exists.

I have the T-Mobile MDA (HTC Wizard) and when I change the location to \Storage Card\My Music\ It doesn't populate the menu with the new files.

Any thoughts on what I may have done wrong? I even tried without the trailing slash.

It's amazing to me that this is so difficult to accomplish, on my last phone (P910 Symbian UIQ) this was built-in OS functionality. Just pick a file for ringer or alarm notification and it worked...

Guys, you need to understand that whatever folder you change it to, it still needs to be \Rings

So, if you change it to \Storage Card\

Then you need to make a folder called \Storage Card\Rings\ and put your ringtones in there, and then your message/notifications in \Storage Card\.

Enjoy.

I've followed the instructions I posted below for DirtyDrummer, and with ZERO success. (Which, subsequently, makes me feel like a bit of a phony, but- we'll cover that later...)

Even after multiple resets/reboots, I can verify with Total Commander that my "Directory" value DOES read "\Storage Card\", and I *do* have a directory named "Rings" on my Storage Card...

Any ideas, anyone? I bought this 2GB MiniSD card for the SOLE PURPOSE of setting customized ringtones for many of my contacts, and I hate to tell Laser_iCE, but this response is utter crap and is hardly in the spirit of successful troubleshooting/hacking:

You CAN just choose a file -- try holding down the Stylus on a file and select "Set as ringtone".

Enjoy.

the problem is that it copies it to the phone memory...which fills up quick :)

4. Now, the very top folder/directory should be " \\ ". Double-tap or click this DIR with the center D-Pad button.
5. Next, double-tap or D-Pad down and click the "registry" DIR.
6. Next, double-tap or D-Pad down and click the "HKCU" DIR.

This method doesn't work for me. Still no input, from anyone, regarding SUCCESSFULLY relocating their ringtones to their StorageCard?

C'mon community- help me out on this one, guys! I've got NEARLY no use for a StorageCard if I can't use it to offload my ringtones, so... ANY help would be greatly appreciated, here, folks!

Thanks, in advance!
