GameBoy Advance on your Wizard!

I recently got my Wizard (T-mobile MDA), spent a few days configuring my device. Syncing with MS ActiveSync via Bluetooth, installing all nifty utility software on board (Resco, Spb Software, etc..). Did all the registry hacks possible and even clocked my CPU. After this was all done and said my device was extremely functional as a PDA but there was no fun!

The games on board were mediocre. I went searching on the web and I wasn’t too impressed with the selection of action games that were out there. So I started to look for any possible GameBoy emulators that could be out there. There weren’t too many and the few that were out either didn’t quite run to well or didn’t run at all on WM5 (Windows Mobile 5.0). I finally ran into one and I’ve been happily playing Mario Kart and other games that I’ve found the ROMS for on the web.

Note: A video game ROM is just and image of the game that can be copied over to your device so that the emulator can load for you to play.

So I wanted to outline in this article the steps for you to get this up and running on your wizard…

1. Download these files to your PC:
Note: Must be signed in to see files attatched to this article

a. fmodce.zip

b. PocketGBA.zip

c. MarioKart ROM could not be uploaded due to some potential copyright issues, however there are many ROMS are available on the web.

Unzip all files to there own respective directories.

2. From the decompressed fmodce.zip file, Copy files fmodce.dll and fmodce.lib to your \Windows directory on your wizard.

3. Create a folder on your device (\Program Files\GameBoyAdvance) and from the decompressed PocketGBA.zip file copy all files gsgetfile.dll, PocketGBA.cfg, PocketGBA.exe to this folder you’ve created.

4. Create a folder on your device (\My Documents\My Games\GameBoyAdvance) and from the decompressed MarioKart.zip file copy all files to this directory.

5. Navigate to where you copied PocketGBA.exe to (From Step 3) and execute. The interface will load up, now with your stylus touch the “load” icon.

Navigate to where you saved the MarioKart ROM to (From Step 4). Click Ok in upper right hand corner.

Now click the “Run” icon on the emulator’s interface.

Game will Load! Your wizard should display something that looks like this...

Emulator view set to full screen:

6. This is just an extra tip that I’ve done to simplify navigating to the GameBoy emulator executable through your file browser, just simply create a short cut to GameBoy Advance and put it in your “\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Games\” folder and your GameBoy Advance emulator will now show up there from now on.

Happy Video Gaming!

Very nice article, thanks.

I don't know if it was a concious decision not to include the game ROM. I am not sure about the copyright issues when it comes to games ROMs, and when I am not sure I'd rather be safe then sorry. So, please do not make any files available here on the HTC Wizard Web unless you are absolutely sure that there are no copyright issues.

But again, nice article, much appreciated!

Ok, ive used it and its very very slow. Sound is so terrible i just shut it off... Just like all other emulators I've tried, it doesn't run up to par to be able to actually play to me. I tried Zelda Minish Cap, Mario 4 advanced, and Sonic 3 on it and none work good at all. Does Mario Kart run good for you? You should email it to damien.benoit@gmail.com to let me try but the others run like crap so I dont see it running any better.

Thanks for the post anyway though!

hmm with the games I've played it works great. Sonic, Mario Kart, etc... Although my CPU is originally clocked from 180mhz to 240mhz. Btw this is with the sound off also.

You can also go in and edit your button mappings. That way when you play horizontal mode you can use your joystick can sit left, as if you were holding a real game controller.

I had the controller and everything setup right, and sound turned off, link just runs slow.. BUT.. i didn't do any overclocking of my device.. Is it the stuff inside of Registry Wizard?I was always scared to do that mainly because when i first started doing that with and I ended up having to format the device because crap started crashing and running slow, dont know if it was because of overclocking but i didn't want to take chances... But what do you recommend?

Make sure you do step no. 2.

2. From the decompressed fmodce.zip file, Copy files fmodce.dll and fmodce.lib to your \Windows directory on your wizard.

I overlooked it and i got the same error msg until i did that.
(but i just copied those files to the same folder i but the PocketGBA.exe file.

now it works fine, slow...but it does run.

hope this helps

you're the man!

i found tons of rom's online, so it wasnt a problem. Thanks! I do have a bit of a sluggish speed running Advance Rally. Pheraps it's the motivating factor for me to overclock my 8125 (which i haven't done yet)

btw, any other emulators I can look into (particularly the NES version)? I've had a itch to play the original Super Mario and dont want to buy a console only for it.

If its a little sluggish I really recommend setting up your Gameboy Advance the way they set up Skype to run on one of the articles here.. I find my Wizard runs a little choppy if the when its overclocked all the time, so this way you only clock your device when you launch GameBoy Advance and when your finished playing it automatically clocks back to your orginal speed. I also notice my battery life seems to have a little more longetivity too.

I don't know of any NES emulators, but from what I've seen on the web alot of NES ROMS can be found and played on GameBoy Advance.

I have loaded Pocket SNES version 1.12.200 and it loads and looks great, but even though I have found ROMS I have not been able to get the ROMS to load into the software. This program is highly rated at http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1338 and I feel you all may be very happy with it. If someone with more emulator experience than myself wants to try this, let me know what you think.

GBA works great, when the instructions are followed and you overclock (using OmapClock.exe; see Useful Software in the handbook here) a bit (I'm overclocked at 240).
I store my ROMs on my 2GB miniSD and it has played great.
Currently, I'm playing Crash Bandicoot, which I got here:
http://gba-roms.us/gba_roms.php

For those whose downloads don't run: make sure you got the right ROMs - this only runs .GBA files, which I learned after the first .7Z ROM didn't work. Repeat: .GBA only!

Now, have some serious fun!

I have a new 8125 the minisd card is on order.

I have followed your instructions and can get to the GBA load screen. However, it tells me that the available memory for a cartrige is 16 M. Will that clear up when I get my minisd card? or is there something I missed?
