The Opera Web Browser

One of the nice features of a device like the Wizard is the ability to browse the web anywhere, anytime. Unfortunately, the pre-installed Internet Explorer browser is very substandard. My main objective is that it doesn't support Javascript, so many websites won't work. The other Big Missing Feature are multiple windows or tabs. But there is a very good alternative, the Opera Webbrowser for PPC.

Pros:

  • Superb rendering of webpages on a small screen.
  • Supports Javascript.
  • Tabs.
  • Status bar showing progress of page being loaded.

Cons:

  • This Beta expires in June, the final version will not be free.
  • There's no keyboard shortcut for going back a page. You either need to navigate through the menu (Menu>Navigate>Back) or get your stylus out to click the Back button. Hopefully, they will implement the backspace shortcut in the final version.

Excellent find! I know it's only a month or so but it's better than nothing. I was looking on the Opera site a while back when I first got my XDA Mini S but couldn't find any info on a version for it...

"Unfortunately, the pre-installed Internet Explorer browser is very substandard."

Andre, while I don't disagree that Pocket IE is lacking, PIE in WM5 is a huge improvement over previous versions. The "fit to screen" function is new and combine that with the ability to do landscape and adjust the text size, it actually works better than I had anticipated.

I've also been using the Opera beta and am impressed with it as well. Unfortunately, it really is beta code, and is not stable for daily use as yet. I'll re-evaluate the product at its release, but currently, I'm sticking with PIE, as it does perform most of my web browsing requirements.

I'm not familiar with older versions of PIE, but the fact they why were considerably worse just doesn't soften my stance on the lacking functionality of the current PIE. I have no problem to admit that what PEI can do, it does satisfactory well. However, not having Javascript and not being able to open multiple tabs or windows, is simply too big a limitation for me. It renders too many websites unusable.

FYI, I do use Opera's Beta2 on a daily basis. I have it under the "Explorer" hardware button. Although there are some bugs to fix, I have no problems with stability. My two main complaints with the current Opera version are the stealing of focus (if you have it in the background, it will pop up out of the blue -- hence, you're forced to always close it), and the lack of keyboard shortcuts (esp. for "back")

Fair enough - I'm not suggesting PIE doesn't need improvement (far from it), I just wanted to point out the vast improvement over previous versions - I've been forced to use it for the last 5 years since there has been no alternative.

It is fortunate that vendors such as Opera and Access NetFront are stepping up to the plate and creating true desktop-level browsers for PPC and Smartphone.

The reason I mentioned stability, is because of several browsing and posting issues I've had to date. Hopefully they will be addressed in the final release, I've submitted the issues to Opera as beta test issues.

You should install Opera from the Opera Website (see the link I gave in my blog entry at the top, at the end of the first paragraph). The file that is then downloaded is opera_wmppc5_85b2.cab and not a .rar file.

Good luck.

It's Mozilla Firefox for WM5. Currently at 0.14 (as of the last time I saw it), but it seems pretty nice.

And of course, it's open source :)

Do you know where to download it? I see no reference to it on the official Firefox download pages.

I've installed Minimo, and I'm impressed given the state of it's development. I'll certainly keep an eye on it!

Jon, thanks for the info, I had not looked into that project for many months. Time to see where its at in its development, the version I tried last summer was a very early beta.

PIE's support for javascript may not be complete, but it certainly does support it. I wrote a mortgage calculator that works just fine using javascript.

Don't get me wrong: I dislike PIE's rendering irregularities, and would not use it but for lack of another permanent option.

I know nothing about either besides the big deal over javascript. but would you say its a battle of preference or does it come down to actual performance? which browser would you choose and why? thanks for info

**well i happened to attempt to install Minimoand after all is done i et a message saying instalation was unsuccessful. the program or setting cannot be installed because it is not digitally signed with a trusted certificate. ** what does this mean?
