The start of something..

I just swapped my trusty N80 for an o2 XDA mini s and wondered if I'd done the right thing. After modding PC's, PSP's and version1 Xbox's for the last few years imagine my delight when I find there is a massive aftermarket 'Homebrew' ROM community and more apps and tweaks than I know what to do with linked to the 'Wizard (took a while to find all this out though).

I fancy trying a few of these ROMs but am a bit scared of bricking my lifeline. First thing I gotta do is find an original o2 ROM as a fallback.

Bit of searching has made me aware of some G3/4 variant in the Wiz, mine's a G4 which doesn't mean a whole lot to me at the mo.

Any sites, hints, or step by steps would be welcome also recommended ROMs (quite fancy trying the iPhone copy and WM6)

Biggest annoyance at the moment is I can't get ActiveSync (4.1, 4.2 or 4.5) to actually sync on my laptop when it works a treat in work! It connects and looks like it's going to but nothing travels...is this common?

I've thrown up my current theme that works with keypad open. Well I tried but tsk isn't a invalid extension!!

Check out xda-developers.com for all the info you need on your g4 wizard.

I'm currently running TNT 5.0 which is a windows mobile 6 rom that recently came out with alot of bug fixes.

For your activesync issues try this: Go into connections on your phone and under usb, uncheck the box that says "enhanced network functionality" and see if that fixes your issues.

I have no USB option in Connections but I know what you mean as I had the same issue with The Dell X51v's at work. We kept having problems with IP addresses. I'm thinking it's my install of Outlook have tried it on a few machines and they all work! I can still explore the phone just not syncronise any items. Have also been using 'WM5torage' to turn the Wizard into a card reader for those machines I meet that don't have activesync installed.

TNT 5.0 looks like a good place to start, thanks for that. The official o2 latest ROM is sat in my file safe incase it goes wrong assuming it's as easy as I think (N-Gage phone on stand by ready for the SIM when I brick my Wizard)

Later that day...
Oh my god it hasn't worked. I got the 'TNT5 pro+HTC Home' ROM and ran the XP installer, got as far as the rainbow screen then was told that it couldn't update my device. My guess is it needs unlocking. The phone is unlocked but the ROM flash not? Anyhow no harm done as a push on the reset button followed by what seems like the longest reset ever and it's back to normal much to the N-Gages disgust.

Succeeded in flashing with the Wizard Love ROM. Used my handy o2 cab to restore the gprs/gsm settings and now it's well quick. I'll post more here when I've found some more working ROMs, hoping for WM6.

1 full working day later and the Wizard seems to have slowed down to a normal pace, bit of a downer but never mind. sodding on screen keyboard cannot seem to keep itself down when the slider is out. Nice to know it'll run ROMs other than stock. Been reading a lot of recent posts about the TNT5 ROM and it seems quite buggy. Missed calls, WiFi not working properly plus volume glitches would all be the things that would make me not bother (well, at least stick with it for a full time ROM).

Having the bug for softmodding the Xbox has mad me strive more to fight the mainstream and try to get more from my technology using open source but the homebrew has to work or you end up going backwards.

Have just downloaded the TNT5 Touch flo and Pro+home ROMs but could not flash with them. Moved the Touch ROM into my Wizard Love folder and tried using that ROM update utility and got to 99% then froze with a recovery message. Remove cable, remove battery, replace battery and get Rainbow screen, reflash. Did that with the correct Love ROM and am back to where I started minus my settings, programs, upgrade....
What's the shelltool? It's on my next Google trail.

Finally I have sussed it out, how to flash ROM images to my CID locked G4 Wizard (o2 XDA MINI S). It only took my a week of google searches and forum reading. I now have the WRCX2 TouchFlo with cube and I love it.
Here's how I did it for anyone that is new to this like me (and so I can remember what I did)
Needed:
Shelltool - to scan any ROM files and make sure they are 'safe'.
SoftSPL - used to flash the ROM to the device.
Wizard Love ROM to flash the device to make it nice and clean before upgrade. This is recommended.
WRCX ROM version 1,2 or 3 depending on what you want. 2 is the only one with the cube so I went for that. You can of course use any ROM you like but for this guide I'll use what I know works.

How:
Download ROM upgrade .exe and use winrar to extract the nk.nbf file, this is the image. Copy the nk.nbf image into the same folder as Shelltool and run to see that it contains only OS and splash.
Now put the nk.nbf file in the same folder as SoftSPL.
Send and install the two .cab files that come with SoftSPL and install the cert first.
Run the START-sSPL.exe and wait for your device screen to go white. This will have temporary unlocked your device and started what looks like a standard install. Cancel and retry the cabs if you don't get a white screen on your device. Avoid running any PC programs while the upgrade process is happening as this can cause it to freeze. Wait and be patient.
Done.

Sorry everyone, the Wizard has gone! I caved and gave it to my 15yr old son for his birthday. Of course I had to get a replacement and was lucky enough to be offered an XDA Exec for £100 so that was it - job done.

I flashed the Exec (HTC Universal) with a decent WM6 ROM in under one hour of ownership. I do miss the Wizard though so I'm giving the Uni a month trial.

More as it unfolds...

I broke the LCD on the Exec after on a week and it has taken nearly two months to get a replacement from Hong Kong after being messed about by one seller and having to wait to get my money back. Got the second screen for £55 (£15 cheaper than the first). All working again now.

On with the WM6 ROM testing...

Still running the Exec (HTC Universal) and am now readying the plan of attack to get back on a Wizard. The Exec is a fantasic bit of kit but it is just too damn big plus I have tried all ways but can't make Tomtom work on it.

The Wizard looks better when running the ipod emulator (ppod, I'll try and attach) which I have found runs the music smoother than media player, less memory used I suppose. There is also the iPhone interface that works better on the Wizard than Universal.

Now, off to ebay to pick up a cheap Wiz (or PSP - I wanna put the M33 custom firmware on one of them!)
