How to get a free (or nearly free) MDA or 8125

After researching, here and on other websites, magazines, etc., about which PDA Phone was best for my needs, I selected the HTC Wizard (T-mobile MDA). Several days later, of perusing Craigslist, Ebay, Letstalk, Amazon, etc., I was determined to forego my first objective of buying a cheap, used MDA as a replacement for my now out-of-contract T-mobile service. However, there aren't any cheap ones; just plenty of expensive (read: overpriced) used ones that people are dumping all over the internet.

Incredibly, the best and cheapest solution turned out to be free, or nearly so (see below):

  1. getting a new MDA from LetsTalk.com, or
  2. getting a refurbished or new 8125 from Cingular.

With Cingular, you can simply order a refurbished phone for $79, plus a $40/mo phone and $40/mo data 2-yr contract. T-mobile, has a more flexible and inexpensive approach, as you'll see next.

For me, T-mobile was the best choice, based on the cost of services I currently want. Cingular would be fine too, for those who find their services to be in line with their needs. It's a personal choice. Also, the cost for a new T-mobile MDA at $74 for me versus $99 for a new Cingular 8125 or $79 for a refurbished 8125 closed the T-mobile deal for me.

How to Get the Same Deal at T-mobile:

  • I got my last AT&T Mobile and my current T-mobile account from LetsTalk.com, so I have always self-referred myself at their website. This enables me to get an automatic $25 discount from LetsTalk when I purchase the next mobile from them. BTW: I can also email this $25 referral discount to anyone else to use, which nets me some other kind of reward from LetsTalk.com.
  • The rest is simply deciding if you want the free MDA or the $74 MDA. To get the free new MDA, simply order the phone with a minimum 2-yr contract for $39/mo phone service and a $30/mo data plan. I chose only the phone contract, so that made the MDA cost only $99. Then, I applied my auto-discount, which dropped the price to $74 for a Brand-new MDA! No rebates, either; it's instant at checkout!
  • The reason I chose not to get the data plan:
    1. I can always get it later (T-mobile never extends contracts or punishes you for these tertiary services); I plan to pare down to their $30/mo phone plan and add an unlimited $20/mo data plan later
    2. I prefer using T-mobile Web (WAP browsing), for email mostly, while on GPRS on the road for only $6/mo
    3. I use WiFi for Pocket IE browsing and Skype at home and on the road for free; where I live, free hotspots are at every 1/2 mile

I liked LetsTalk.com, due to my previous positive experiences with them. At one time, I foolishly tried the fledgling Amp'd Mobile, which was and still is the worst mobile infrastructure and customer support in the history of telephony! However, LetsTalk.com graciously took back all the equipment at no charge, and they also sent me a free shipping label. The bad experience only cost me time, but all my money was returned save for $30 that was applied to the Amp'd Mobile (dis)service.

I strongly suggest that anyone looking for this great PDA Phone, get cracking, because a deal like this is sure to bleed their MDA stock dry quickly.
