Engineer mode in AKU2 ROM

It was already noticed that the HTC Wizard has registry settings reffering to an engineer mode, but in previous ROM versions it did not seem to work. In the new AKU2 ROMs however, it does. You can enable engineer mode as follows:

  • Use Total Commander to navigate to \HKLM\Software\HTC\EngineerMode
  • Assign a value of 1 to BuildIEngineerModeApp
  • Close Total Commander and perform a soft reset by holding the Power Button for 5 seconds
  • Power on your device, and wait for it to boot>/li>
  • Now dial *#*#364#*#*

After about two seconds, a screen will appear with technical information about your cellular connection.

Now the big question is of course, what does all this gibberish mean?

No guarante on the following infos, but maybe interessting for some:

GSM Tab:
========
ARFCN - Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number, the Channel nummber you can use
to calculate the frequency

LAC - Location Area Code

RAC - Region Area Code

MCC - Mobile Country Code, the country the network is located

MNC - Mobile Network Code, the used network provider

Cell ID - Well...guess the what...yup...the ID of your current cell your logged into.

RSSI - Received Signal Strength Indication, tells you how strong the
signal is you receive. The higher the better

Neighboring Cells:
------------------
An overview of the next 4 cells you have around you with their IDs and the corresponding Signal Strength.
If you cell has a higher RSSI as your current cell...the phone will change the cell.

TPL -

RQ - Reception Quality, the bit error rate of the signal. The lower the better.

TA - Timing Advance, tells you !indirect! the distance from your phone to the
base station. One unit is a distance of about 550m in the optimal case when
there are no reflections of the signal. Maximum is a value of 63 - so
35.000m/35 km to the base station.

FH - ????

LRN - Local Roaming Number or Local Routing Number (????)

TMSI - Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity. Will be used instead of the
IMSI in a Location Area and one Provider. Theoretically you can have
a little bit fun with it and switch your identity in a netwrok and
location area...if you can controll it and know other active TMSIs.

PLUV - Periodic Location Update Variable. Tells you a timing value when the phone
is going to send an location update to the provider.

AMR Tab:
========
I guess AMR is for Adaptive Multi Rate codec informations. The codec informations used at the
moment like bitrate, Full Rate, Enhanced Full Rate etc... No Infos on that one. :(

GPRS Tab:
=========
RXLEV - Reception Level / like RSSI
No more infos on the rest.

I purchased my Cingular 8125 on August 17th. The ROM version is 2.25.11.1 WWE and most of these Registry keys referenced in the tweaks section of the handbook are already present. On my 8125 the Engineering mode was already enabled. All I had to do was dial the number. Stereo Bluetooth and push email were supported out of the box as well. The WiFi and call quality are better than acceptable and quite stable. EDGE covers my location which makes me very happy.

First of all it is great to be able to find specific information without restrictions. I have a Qtek 9100. Folowing the instructions I was able to view the engineering mode on my phone and finally the light of carrying only one phone was near (I work in telecom and am forced to carry a Sony Ericsson T616 with field test software and my own Qtek).
While comparing the information I noticed that the information being displayed by the Qtek engineering page is in hexadecimal. This is not a problem for someone in the office who can open up the calculator app in windows and convert it to decimal. Im looking for some type of interface or registry tweak that would allow me to see this information in decimal values.

FH - frequency hop
LRN - Yeah, Location Routing Number (used in routing the call over PSTN)
TPL - I have no idea what TPL is. I've never encountered it before. It might be transaction protocol language, dealing with SS7.
