A ROM for every HTC Wizard brand (Cingular)

The HTC Wizard can be tweaked, and there are several ROMs available for the HTC Wizard. The combination of that makes the HTC Wizard the most fun Pocket PC Phone out there. I posted some tweaks yesterday, today I a gathered a set of HTC Wizard ROMs for you to download. I'll release a set daily.

The HTC Wizard Web runs on a dedicated hosting machine. I get a fair amount of monthly traffic included with the contract, but extra traffic needs to be paid. Feel free to download any ROM you want to try, but please don't download them all just for the sake of downloading. If you got a few cents to spare, please consider a small donation. If things get out of hand (i.e. my monthly bill gets scary), I'll have to take the links down.

Of course, downloads are available to members only. For now, only World Wide English ROMS are available here.

Cingular ROM

Cingular has not released an AKU2 ROM yet, but there is a customised Cingular AKU2 ROM that was built by the people at the XDA Developers Forum. The following Cingular 8125 ROM versions, created by summiter are available:

  • Original shipping ROM
  • Custom Cingular 8125 AKU2 ROM

Both ROMs are RUU versions, which mean you can install them simply by executing the file from your desktop PC. Make sure you have an ActiveSync connection, and make sure that your battery is fully charged.

If you own a non-Cingular version of the HTC Wizard, you can only install these ROMs when you CID unlock your device. Directions are in this entry in the handbook.

I never used these Cingular ROMs myself, but I would like to see the features specific to these ROMs documented in the HTC Wizard Handbook. If you are running any of these ROMS, please inform us about:

  • ROM Version
  • ROM date
  • Extended ROM version
  • Radio version
  • Protocol version
  • What did Cingular customise?
  • What extra software is included?
  • Your experiences running this ROM
  • Anything else you would like to share

I have a fairly recent Cingular 8125 (2 months old) with the 1.8.11.1 ROM. Does anyone know what advanges the custimized ROM offers? And, if for some reason I run into a problem with the customized version, will I void any warranty or have any problem putting the unit back to original shipping status?

Those are ROMs I created. Here's the info you are looking for:

ROM Version: 2.17.7.2
ROM date: 2/10/06
Extended ROM version: custom
Radio version: 02.07.10
Protocol version: 413.1.03
What did Cingular customise: I included all the stock Cingular stuff (except gprsstall.cab which kills wifi), and the Cingular splash screens
What extra software is included: No additional software is installed, however I included the following customizations that were not part of the stock 8125 - wireless today screen icon, remove battery indicator from system tray, allow for select-all contacts, allow unsigned cab file installation.
Your experiences running this ROM: most excellent!
Anything else you would like to share: I encourage folks who are tired of waiting for Cingular's AKU2 release to install this ROM, especially since I created another ROM which allows you to return to full stock condition. I also encourage folks to read the forums at xda-developers as it will answer a lot of questions. Enjoy.

Thanks for the info and glad to see you posting here! The only real question i have about these ROMs is, which Proxy Settings are included in them? There is a discussion here about this. I know my 8125 had different settings from others' 8125s from the factory, i know this is a minor detail, but i'd like to know so that i don't install your update, forget to check, attempt to run on the wrong proxy server, and get billed a LOT for my net access even though i pay for unlimited data.

Thanks, and once again welcome to HTCWizardWeb

This thread is confusing proxy vs access point settings. The ROMs I created use the stock Cingular ROM settings for both. The AP by default is set to wap.cingular.com, which can be used on the MediaNet plan AND the PDA plan. If you have the PDA or laptop plan, you can change the AP to isp.cingular.com or ispda.cingular.com. According to Cingular, the only difference is that the PDA plan AP setting can in some cases allow more channels to be allocated to the connection. Also according to Cingular, if you don't have the PDA or laptop plan codes on your account, you won't be able to connect using the pda or ispda AP accounts.

As far as the proxy settings, I find that having it enabled (which is the default) can break wifi and server activesync. Disabling it does not affect how you are billed. Enabling it can improve web browsing performance.

The only advantage that I can discern to leaving the proxy enabled is if you are wanting to browse the Cingular MEdiaNet WAP deck because the page ( http://device.home ) will not load otherwise.

I wasn't aware that you created these ROMs. A big thank you on behalf of all Cingular user!

Are you okay with the ROMs being available here? Any links you'd like to see in the article to credit you?

No problem with hosting them here. I'll probably keep my discussion of the ROMs on xda-dev just so I'm not trying to follow threads in multiple places.

So, Before I try this (my first ROM upgrade) I have 2 questions.

1. How do I create a backup.
2. Does this update include the ability for high quality stereo to a stereo bluetooth headset?

This is my main reason for doing it.
Thanks

Ok I’m about to try this upgrade but feel like Dr. Frankenstein. I would hate to turn my baby into a hideous creature of the night. All said but not done I have confidence in myself so lets get it on.

Now where was that hammer?

The Custom Cingular 8125 AKU2 ROM link above is working just fine for me. I've had it up and running for 2+ weeks with no real problems. I did have to go into both proxy settings and say "don't use a proxy" (uncheck proxy checkbox) for Media Net & My Work Network to get the wifi to work. Everything works like a charm - super fast.

I know for a fact that I'm using AKU2 since when I glanced down at my 8125 about an hour ago it said something along the lines of "in order to sync mail, your admin must enforce a security policy" or something along those lines. Net/net - my company is enforcing security policies across the air for the mobile devices.

Pretty cool, huh?

I thought it might be handy to have the original ROM versions of the device as shipped by Cingular recorded here. These were obtained by navigating to 'Start -> Settings -> System -> Device Information'.

If anyone finds that their stock Cingular 8125 phone has different version numbers than these, please record them as another comment on this blog entry so that we can keep track of all of the "official" versions. Thanks!

Click on "software downloads"

Still trying to figure all this out, but this is a great web, thanks!!!

I have just downloaded the ROM that is apparently the last official one done [RUU_Wizard_225111_22511102_022511_CWS_WWE_Ship_1.exe] that I got from HTCs site at http://www.htcamerica.net/support/8125/software-downloads.html

I put this here because with all of the potential flashing of ROMs etc, I thought it might be good to be able to get back to "home".

I have not figured out how to upload a file yet so I cannot attach it.

Ver 2.25.11.1 WWE
Date 5/11/06
Radio Ver 02.25.11
Protocol Ver 4.1.13.12
ExtROM Ver 2.25.11.102

Sorry/regards,

SreWolfe
