WIFI 802.11g on your HTC Wizard

The HTC Wizard has WIFI built-in, which in itself is wonderful. However, some manufacturers have decided not to enable 802.11g connectivity by default. More and more people own wireless network equipment based on the 802.11g standard and want to connect with their HTC Wizard.

The following registry tweak allows connecting to a 802.11g network. Be aware that using this tweak will not give you a much faster wireless connection on your HTC Wizard, the hardware is simply not fast enough to cope with the theoretical speed of 54 Mb/s. However, the tweak will enable you to connect to 802.11g-only networks, which is a big advantage.

Please take a look at this topic on the XDA Developers Forum for more information. In this topic people discuss a .cab file that tweaks some more settings on your HTC Wizard than just the enabling of 802.11g, but I’ll discuss those in a future post.

To enable 802.11g capability to your HTC Wizard make the following changes in the registry:

  • Use Total Commander to navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMM\TNETWLN1\PARMS
  • Assign a value of 1 to dot11SupportedRateMask
  • Assign a value of 8 to dot11SupportedRateMaskG
  • Perform a soft reset

  • Those of you who don't feel comfortable editing the registry can download the attached .cab file, put it on their HTC Wizard, execute and soft reset. The attached file is visible to registered members of the HTC Wizard Web only.

I applied this tweak when it was on the original site and it worked like a charm. no bugs nothing. I have two airports running g and I connect to them both with 128 bit encryption without any hassle.

This worked for me as soon as I got rid of the medianet proxy from cingular. It won't work with out that step.

I've been using this for a while on b, g, and b/g networks and I have one question about it. I run an 802.11 b/g wireless network in my house. Will my Wizard connect via b if the network allows both b and g connections or will it default to the faster g whenever possible?

    Hi

    With the tweak applied:

Take your AP and configure it to "only b" mode.
    Try to connect.
If the Wizard gets connected, then the tweak is enabling the "g" mode and not disabling the "b" mode.
Of course, in this case you are connected via the "b" protocol.
Copy a 1Mb file and take the time (it can be by appreciation, not necessarily with a chronometer... the ideal thing would be a benchmark utility).
Change the AP configuration again to "g or mixed mode"
Copy a second 1Mb file and take the time (idem).
Make your conclusions and let us know.

    Regards

I am using the T-Mobile MDA with the latest BIOS/ROM update from T-Mobile. I made the registery changes (I had to add the dot11SupportedRateMaskG entry ). However, I can not connect to my D-Link DWL-7100AP using wither "B" or "G". I do use WPA-PSK (TKIP) encryption. The T-Mobile MDA device status reports "Connecting to network" but never obtains an IP address. I see the MDA attemping to connect in the DLINK AP device so it appears to be trying to connect. I did double-check my network configuration on the MDA. I know my wireless works at home as all my PC's and Laptops connect without a problem.

    Hi,

I have the same problem as you, my PDA sees the G network but never connects. Did you find a solution?

    Many thanks,

    Rob.

Applied tweak to my TMObile MDA, got it working on g network, but now I'm having trouble with battery life. Does the change turn on WiFi permanently?

I've applied this tweak a couple of weeks ago and about four days ago I've started with serious battery life problems (from full to zero in less than an hour). I'm still trying to pinpoint the culprit for the drainage, but this tweak was not on my suspect list (it is now that you mention it).

Anyway, do somebody have the "normal" settings to undo the tweak?

    Zemog...

easiest thing: Just let the battery run down completely. That's what happened to me. Probably a hard reset would do, too, but I didn't have to restore all my data and reinstall my programs.

Thank you, I finally did a hard reset to start fresh.
And in my device, the default factory settings are 1 and 4 respectively for the two registry keys for this tweak.

Please note that my "factory settings" are with a customized Cingular device. After a hard reset the device started a self-customization from Cingular, so that could have changed the real factory settings, I guess so due to the fact that both registry keys are already there, as opposed to some people that have had to create the second key.

Well, after the factory reset, I can safely say that this tweak had nothing to do with my battery issues. My battery still goes berzerk even after undoing the tweak, so I guess my baterry is fubar (I really hope it is the battery and not the device). I expect to get a new battery within the next two days.

So, clearly stated: In my case the tweak was unrelated to battery problems.
