Wifi problem with Cingular 8125

I have a cable modem with a wireless "b" network. I can see a connection but cannot get any feedback from any URL site. I have tried to disable the 128 bit encryption but still no luck. Any ideas?

Actually the guy at the Cingular store told me about the workaround for this problem when I bought my phone.

1. Go to Start --> Settings --> Connections Tab --> Connections.

2. Under MEdia Net tap 'Set up my proxy server'

3. Uncheck the box next to 'This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet'

4. After that you should be good to go ^_^

Doesn't this have a negative impact on the rate of EDGE communication? I heard that using the EDGE proxy server radically sped up transfer.

I wouldn't say "radically"- maybe "slightlty". I honestly noticed very little difference, and the benifit of having working WiFi makes the small hit on EDGE performane worthwhile.

I've noticed something, It's only recently been a problem though with this workaround. Without the proxy server it seems that I became unable to connect to GPRS. It wasn't a problem for the first week that I had my phone but for the last 18 hours or so I had been unable to connect to GPRS at all without the proxy server set up. However, in the last 2 minutes (while typing this up) I've been able to connect without the proxy server. My connection rate is exceptionally slow but once I am connected I don't notice any significant difference.

P.S. If anyone else has this problem or just wants to turn the proxy server back on, the Cingular proxy server address is 'wireless.cingular.com'

I think you can use either wap.cingular.com or isp.cingular.com.

Do you need a username/password?

Be careful, these servers should not be interchangeable, it should depend on your plan. You may get charged per byte if you are not on the unlimited plan. So, make sure you're setting the right server. See this thread, Cingular has very confusing data plans: http://discuss.treocentral.com/archive/index.php/t-80374.html

By the way, usually when I'm in a Wifi hotspot, I've created a profile just for WiFi with no connections defined. This way I'm forcing it to use the Wifi connection. I can then control when I want Wifi and when I want GPRS, instead of automatic switching.

wap vs the isp address is crucial when it comes to determining your billing. If you have the $40 per month unlim PDA feature or plan, then you should be using the isp.cingular address. If you're like me and you're using MEdiaNet to connect for just browsing and email, make sure that you're using the wap.cingular.

Well it appears I don't know what I am doing. I used the settings above and I lost all connection to WAP and I was never able to get anything on ISP. I finally for a knowledge base article on the Cingular Support web page that gave me the instructions to at least get WAP back, but it does not even address ISP for GPRS. Is there perhaps a different HTTP port and local SOCKS setting? Also when I used the +9171234567 for the dial up connection, I received the message that there was not a moden at the other end. I didn't noticed the "1234567" for the phone number at first. So what would be the correct dial in phone number for the ISP.CINGULAR if you happent to know it ..
Thanks in advance

My setting was already unchecked so this is obviously not the issue. I wonder if I may need to perform a hard reset to see if the problem goes away? It appears now that gprs connection doesn't work. This use to work.

I also am on Cingular and tried simply unchecking the proxy box for MEdia Net. This did not work for me. I could get an IP address from my router when using WiFi but could not surf. So, I left the proxy setting unchecked and modified the wireless card settings on the device to hard-code the DNS servers for my home network. Once I did that, I was able to use WiFi at home. Obviously this doesn't solve my problem if I am using WiFi somewhere else, but I'll work on that later.

Same: I unchecked the proxy box and can't connect to the Internet with wifi using my Cingular 8125.

I've also done a hard reset.

It doesn't make sense: The Cingular 8125 has found a wifi connection, but can't use it to connect to the Internet.

Any new ideas or especially solutions?

ok, so i am not going to be using the GPRS function at all and just using the wifi. i have a netgear XR (extended range) router. i have trie d using WEP, WPA-PSK and even non secured wiereless settings on my router and still nothing works. my wizard occasionally gets a 192.168... ip addresss for my home network, but when trying to connect to the web (ex: http://,.gmail.com) i get the error that the page cannot be found (or whatever it is on the Wizard)
Anyone have any kind of suggestion?

I actually deleted my MediaNet connection because I only planned to use Wifi....I have a "Work" connection set up with no proxy server used; when I have WiFi turned ON I can connect to available WiFi networks with no problem. I also use Opera (which does not limit me to the de-contented "mobile" sites) instead of the default browser.

I finally was able to connect to outside servers so began to believe my 8125 had trouble connecting to my Linksys "B" WIFI. I purchased a Linksys wireless-G WIFI router and now my 8125 works at home. It works with 64 bit encryption turned on. Finally!!

Rather than just messing with proxy settings, try using Opera 8.60, which was just released a couple of days ago (non-beta). I loaded it up and have no problem connecting using GPRS or Wifi. I can even change it on the fly. My thought is there must be some problem with PIE not recognizing Wifi. Opera is a faster browser anyway.

I am also having the same issue. It shows connectedat the networkcards.but When I open IE (can't browse any website) or Skypeor Agile Messenger,it all says that ther eis no internet connection.

If I do a hard reset, does it eraseall the data? Is there a way to store my data toa storage card and get back after hard reset?

I think I know the answer to this but I have to ask. I have an 8125 with an unlimited data plan which does NOT include WiFi. That is an additional $50 per month which I don't want to pay. I only want to use the WiFi on a home network because my cell signal strength is poor at best in the house. Is there a way to connect wirelessly with my Westell wireless router to surf on my DSL account, using the 8125? Cingular says I must signup for WiFi capability on my account before being able to connect to my home network. True or False? Any suggestions anyone? I don't understand why Cingular won't let their clients network their 8125s with their home connections. Please help!

I'm able to connect just fine on my home wireless, as are many other forum members.

I would argue that Cingular has no right to charge someone for connecting to their own devices, and using thier own networks.
I am assuming that there was some miscommunication between you and your CS rep and they understood that you wanted to connect to one of _their_ wifi networks.

I have an 8125 with Cingular. I have the $20 unlimited data plan. I get a GPRS/Edge connection everywhere I can get a cell connection around here in S. Louisiana. (BTW, I can use this to tether my laptop for a connection to the Cingular ISP.)

But when I am at home, it is much faster to link with my home wireless network. It has NO relationship to the GPRS account or to Cingular. It should work even if you did not have a cell phone account.

Just call up the Comm Manager; click on the WIFI button to turn it on and then click on "Settings" (lower right), then click on "Wi-Fi Settings." If the wireless router is not security enabled, it should connect automatically. If your router has security enabled (recommended) then you will need to set the security type and password on the "Wi-Fi settings" - NETWORK KEY tab. When you are connected, your router will provide an IP (on the "Settings" advanced tab). Then just tap the "OK" button (upper right), exit the Comm Manager and enjoy!

BTW, if you have BOTH a WiFi and GPRS connection, the 8125 will sort it all out and give you the best connection. It just works. I leave the GPRS turned on most of the time and turn the WiFi on when I am at home (both are connected).

NOTE: If you have the 8125 connected to a computer with the USB Active Sync, wireless will NOT work. So be sure to disconnect it from the AS connection before setting up WiFi.

Ray, you mentioned that you have no trouble switching back and forth between wifi and gprs. As far as I can tell, this is only possible if the internet connection settings are the same for both. I'm having trouble because I want to connect to a wifi network at work that requires a proxy, but I don't need a proxy (or need a different proxy) with the Cingular gprs connection.

The only place I can find to enter a proxy address is in the the System>>Connections area. I set up two different "networks". One that points to my wifi site with proxy, and one that points to my gprs without a proxy. Then I have to manually switch between the two in the selection for "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet..." selection.

If I don't do this, I end up using the same proxy settings whether I'm connecting to a wifi spot or gprs.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this just a limitation in Windows?

What's worse is I also want to connect to other wifi spots without proxies. I have to create more "networks" in the System>>Connections area to handle the differences in the proxies and then manually switch between them. I wish there were a product out there like "Access Connections" on IBM laptops that allows people to manage entire connection profiles including connection type, proxy info, IP, DNS, etc., and then easily switch between them.

Sorry. I do not use proxies. For the Edge/GPRS connection, you do NOT want to enable the proxy. I use my 8125 on wifi in several different locations - I have secured wifi both at home and at church but neither uses a proxy. The 8125 wifi works well. Evidently, the antenna is not very good since I do not get as good range as on my laptop but wifi is a nice touch. I have even used it on other wifi networks when they are available.

My suggestion is to turn off all proxies and see if the connection to your work is still operational. If so, then you have your answer.

Well I have had my phone now for almost a year and I have never really got the WIFI connection configured entirely right. I can connect to my home and office internet. But I can't seem to surf. If I go and turn off the WIFI and turn it back on, it seems to let me get a page but I have to constantly do this everytime I move from page to page .... So does anyone want to help me scratch my head on this one?

Thanks

I do not use the WIFI much for surfing. I live in an area served by Edge/GPRS and I generally use that for surfing the net. It is a good bit faster than dial-up and is available almost everywhere in this area.
I do not experience the problems you mentioned when surfing (using either Wifi or Edge) but that may be because I use PIE-Plus (extended Pocket Internet Explorer). I recommend that you check it out http://www.reensoft.com/PIEPlus/ . It allows you to use TABs and several other great functions.
One other thing that I have found about WIFI and the web: Generally, when I open the browser, the modem calls GPRS to access the web. It appears that (even if WIFI is connected) the 8125 will default to GPRS for Internet. The only way that I can assure that I am using the WIFI is to turn the modem off. To do this, go to the communication manager and click on the icon below the WIFI (looks like a PDA). It will then grey out and - if you have WIFI enabled - you will be surfing on that link.
Without doing this, you may actually be connecting on the WAP modem (if you are using proxie access). I don't use it but WAP may connect at such a slow speed that it could be causing your problem - especially if you live in an area NOT served by Edge.

Thanks .. We have GPRS here as well but I have a perfectly good WIFI here at the office and home so I try to use that. I opted for the 5MB data package in case I needed it away from either of these locations. I have began using the OPERA brower and it takes some getting use to but that has not solved my problem either. I just wonder if this couldn't be corrected by some kind of a registry hack. Is there anyone out there that would be familiar with one
