ActiveSync 4.1 over IP

I have a Cingular 8125. New to the forums, haven't upgraded ROM, etc.

I am a personal user and do not have access to Exchange.

I use the Cingular Xpress Mail client to send/receive mail but it is a real kludge. What I would really like to have are the features of Activesync and Exchange Server but with my Outlook Desktop. Basically, I want to sync my device over the network. I understand this used to b possible in old versions of Activesync, and i am wondering if there is a workaround today.

Also - am I the only one who struggles to figure out how to control whether the device uses Wifi or GPRS/EDGE for data? I'd like to turn GPRS/EDGE off and use ONLY wifi.

This is for the second part of your post. In my experience, I've noticed that if I connect to a WiFi network before running any Internet programs I will automatically use only the WiFi and not connect to the GPRS network. As far as actually disabling GPRS/EDGE I have no idea how to do that sorry.

My Phone:
Cingular 8125 (HTC Wizard 100)
ROM version: 1.8.11.1 WWE
ROM date: 11/24/05
Radio version: 01.09.11
Protocol version: 4.0.13.20
ExtROM version: 1.8.11.103

AFAIK there is no workaround for syncing over WiFi with ActiveSync 4.x. I know several people that use a hosted exchange service to fill this gap and they are very pleased. There is a monthly charge (US$4-US$10) but it may be worth it. Here is a link to one of these services: http://www.4smartphone.com/Default.aspx

Some news I have read indicates ActiveSync 4.2 is coming soon (like anything MS releases...eventually), and addresses the Wi-Fi sync issue. Of course you can sync via Bluetooth with your HTC.

I am currently using the 4SmartPhone service, as well as the Cingular Xpress mail client with no issues. There are some other Exchange hosting services out there (some free) as well. Check out the http://xda-developers.com forums. There is lots of good info on this topic and user feedback.

Cheers

Hi there,

I too was looking for a way to sync over IP, however I read that Microsoft dropped it in version 3.8 (after discussions with their Enterprise Customers), however, I read somewhere else that there is another possible way of doing it (if you're running your own network) which is:

Set your network adaptor on your DESKTOP machine to 169.254.2.2, with a netmask of 255.255.255.0.

Set your network adaptor on your phone to 169.254.2.1, same netmask. You can set a default gateway of your router, but this will need to be a different IP address (maybe .254?)

You should then be able to sync, as ActiveSync will think it's plugged in to your desktop.

I'll be honest, I've not tried this, but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work (if I'm honest).

Hope that helps!

Am also a newbie with an 8125 who does not use Outlook at all. My corporate laptop uses Lotus Notes and a firewall locked down tighter than a maiden's drawers, so I cannot get ActiveSync 4.1 to work. My personal machine is a Mac iMAC G4 which uses Entourage.
Before I explore syncing with an Internet Exchange server, I need to know if it is possible to sync at all withut using Outlook. I can export my address book from Notes into a number of formats, such as vCARD or CSV. I can import them into the Mac Address book. Can I import them into Exchange and then sync using IP?
