Wi-Fi Prefers using GPRS

Hi All

I have this issue which is annoying me to no end. I have Wi-Fi setup and working perfectly. I can ping external IP's and have full access EXCEPT when I open Internet Explorer which automatically connects my GPRS and prefers to browse through GPRS.

I have checked that there is NO proxy settings specified anywhere in any of my connections but still it connects GPRS. I have done much searching on the web and it seems many users are faced with this dilemma but nobody seems to have a fix.

Basically it relates to the way Internet Explorer does it's DNS lookup, that is what activates the GPRS despite me having my own fully functional DNS servers specified in my WI-FI connection. So ... there MUST be a silly little registry entry somewhere to fix this ... but I am buggered if I can find it.

Oh before anyone asks, if I manually go to SYSTEM > CONNECTIONS > CONNECTIONS > ADVANCED > SELECT NETWORKS and manually switch from "My ISP" to "My Work Network" before I turn on Wi-Fi then it works perfectly and does not activate GPRS.

A strange and annoying one but I have not given up yet :)

Anyone have any FIX for this???

Thanks
Mitch

I was in contact with iMate support who sent me their basic document on setting up WIFI which is no help because WIFI is working fine, I then emailed them (by their request) a very detailed explanation of the problem and cc'd their agent in South Africa.

The agent in South Africa got back to me this morning with a setting I had to change and it now works perfectly. In other words when WIFI is turned on and I browse the internet it does NOT try to connect GPRS. When WIFI is turned off and I try to browse it DOES connect GPRS which is the way it is supposed to work.

Here's the settings to check. (These are based on an iMate K-Jam with the latest Rom Build 2.16.9.1 WWE)

A)
START > SETTINGS > CONNECTIONS > CONNECTIONS > ADVANCED > SELECT NETWORKS

- Programs that automatically connect to internet ..... "My ISP" (or whatever your ISP settings are called.

- Programs that automatically connect to private network ... "My Work Network"

B)
Open Comm Manager and Turn on WIFI (Make sure you are NOT connected to your PC via USB when doing this)

START > SETTINGS > WIRELESS LAN

- In the bottom left corner of your screen click MENU
- Click on NETWORK CARDS
- Click on your Access Point (once)
- In the "Configure Wireless Network" dialog box set it to > Connects to "The Internet"
- Click OK and stay on the next screen
- Then click the tab (bottom) that says "Network Adapters"
- Make sure it is also set to "The Internet"
- Click OK > OK > X
- Turn OFF WIFI
- Soft Reset The Device by holding down the power button for 5 seconds and choosing YES to the popup message.
- Wait a few seconds and power on the device again.

When your device restarts, start WIFI and open a browser and try and browse. It should NOT connect GPRS now.

Turn OFF WIFI and then try and browse and it should now connect using GPRS.

This fix worked perfectly for me and now it automatically knows to browse with WIFI when connected to WIFI and to browse with GPRS when there is no WIFI. I looked through so many settings but I did not see the "Menu" option in the bottom left corner of the screen when I was in the WIRELESS LAN section, very easy to miss it but in there is the crucial setting.

Kudos go out to Clyde from Leaf Wireless in South Africa for this fix. Thanks Clyde :)

Hope this helps the many others who I have seen complaining about this problem.

Cheers
Mitch

This problem was driving me crazy, this little seemingly simple fix works great so far. I have a T-mobile MDA with ROM 2.26

Thanks,

My Cingular 8125 does the same thing - It is "connected" to WiFi, but just sits on "locating . . . " when I try to browse, and can't pull up any pages on the web. Did you ever figure it out?

I followed the fix above and it worked perfectly. Just follow it and sometimes it does take time to open the page.

Greetings from Mexico!!!

I´m new in this community, because I purchased one of these fantastic HTC Wizards these days (I got just 3 days with it). In my case is the "aka" Qtek A9100. It is an extremately versatile unit and also my first PDA phone. I didn´t know what I have been missing all this time!!!

I only want to thank the author for this little guide posted here. It was REALLY useful I made my day a happy one. I was getting disappointed a little bit because of the WIFI problem you all describe here. But I followed the step by step guide and now is working perfectly... In my case the carrier for this phone is Movistar (from Telefonica, Spain) and I realized that the Internet settings were configured on purpose to work only with the GPRS of the carrier (of course for paying for the service)

Now I´m glad. My HTC is now FULLY operational. I don´t know if it has the lastest ROM, but I don´t care. As the murphy law would say: "If it works, don´t touch it! "

THANKS again and congratulations for this great community!
